LAN

Wake on LAN

What is it?
The ability to switch on remote computers through special network packets. This only works with network cards and motherboards that are Wake on LAN compliant.

How does it work?
WOL is based on the following principle:

When the PC shuts down, the NIC still gets power, and keeps listening on the network for a ‘magic’ packet to arrive. This packet must contain a certain byte-sequence, but can be encapsulated in any kind of packet (IPX, IP, anything). Take a look at the code for the magic sequence.

This program uses UDP for sending the packet. The complete UDP packet, sent over an ethernet interface, looks something like this:

[ethernet header][IP header][UDP header][Magic sequence][CRCS]

The only goal of the script is to send this packet over the network. It expects no returning data, since the NIC only listens, and does not reply anything.

Hardware requirements
Green PC, motherboard BIOS support, network cards, PCI 2.2, Operating system support (Windows 95 - DELL’s document -, Windows 98, Windows 2000)

Motherboards
Most modern ATX motherboards should have a 3-pin Wake-on-LAN connector near the PCI slots and should included BIOS support for Wake-on-LAN power up. If you have an Award BIOS check the Power Management Setup for this option.

Network cards
The network card should also include a 3-pin Wake-on-LAN connector. One of the network cards that includes this connector is the Intel Pro/100+ (chipset 82559)
2.4 Wake-up frame

A Wake-up frame is a special data packet containing the Ethernet address of the remote network card. Somewhere in this frame should exist a byte stream (magic sequence) composed by, at the least, 16 times the repetition of the Ethernet address and preceded by a synchronization stream of 6 bytes of FFh.
Magic sequence

If the Ethernet address of a target computer is 01:02:03:04:05:06 (6 bytes), then the LAN controller of that machine should be looking for the following sequence

FFFFFFFFFFFF010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506

inside the frame.

Ethernet addresses
An Ethernet Address ia a six octets (48 bits) number that uniquelly identifies every network interface card (NIC). The first three octects (24 bits) are known as the Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) and identifies its manufacturer.

The IEEE organization maintains a list of the OUIs in the following web page: IEEE OUI and Company_id Assignments.

Since May 14, 2001 the IEEE Local and Metropolitan Area Network (802) standards can be downloaded from the IEEE web site ( http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/).

How to obtain Ethernet addresses

Local NICs:

* Window 9x - Run the program “winipcfg.exe”
* Windows NT & Windows 2000 - Run the program “ipconfig.exe /all”
* Linux - Run the program “ifconfig”

Other methods:

* Ping a remote machine and check the arp table
* Ping a broadcast address and check the arp table
* Check the database of the arpwatch daemon
* Check the the leases and configuration file of the DHCP daemon

Linux:

* ifconfig
* ping -b -c 2 -i 15 192.168.0.255
* cat /proc/net/arp
* arp -a
* static entries: /etc/ether

Windows NT

* ipconfig /all

keep kids safe on the internet, Internet Slang Terms All Parents Should Know

April 9, 2008 at 12:01 pm | In Computer Tricks | 2 Comments

Here’s how to keep kids safe on the internet
Don’t let them get online in the first place.
That way, you keep them ignorant of life, but safe.

Protectionist legislation isn’t needed. Put the full responsibility back on the parents where it belongs.

You don’t want your kid around porn, then YOU sit right there WITH them (like you should be doing anyway) and make sure they don’t see porn.

I personally am tired of the government pushing all the responsibility of child rearing on the public/businesses and not forcing the parents, who made the kid in the first place, to do their job.

Keeping your kids safe online

Do you know what your kids are up to online? Of course you do! You?ve blocked all the porn sites, set up filters, and even have a monitoring program to let you know if your kids are talking about sex, or porn, or meeting up ?uncle bob? from the chat room. You?re a smart parent, but you?re still probably clueless.

There?s a new trend popular among teenage chatters, and your filters won?t pick up any of it. It?s called l33tspeak, netspeak or just plain slang (leet speak from the word elite). You know what I?m talking about. Acronyms like lol wtf bbiab and nm. Using single letter words: U replaces you, R replaces are, o replaces oh, m replaces am etc?

Less popular, but still widely used (especially in games) is true l33tspeak, which involves using numbers instead of letters. 4 replaces A, 3 replaces E, 7 replaces T 1 replaces L, and $ replaces S. These are just a few examples, some of it is worse like /\/ and /\/\ , or 13 instead of B.

Today?s kids are taking their creativity to the internet, and it?s affecting the way they speak. So bad in fact, that school teachers have even reported seeing ?lol? (laughing out loud) turn up on hand-written papers. (How would you pronounce that?)

Many kids as old as 17 don?t know the difference between homonyms such as there, their, and they?re. Hell, there aren?t too many 17 year olds left who can even spell h-o-m-o-n-y-m anymore, and no it isn?t spelled with an i.

If you?re concerned about your kids, it?s absolutely crucial you learn to understand their language. Your filters may pick up porn, but do they catch the word ?pron??

Another key phrase is the word PAW, short for ?parents are watching?. Can you think of a non-naughty use for that sentence? I can?t.

Sure you blocked porn sites, but what about Google image search? Any teenager can tell you that online image searches are the best free porn sites ever.

So what can you do? Talk to your kids. Get your own copy of AOL Instant Messenger and put their names on your buddy list. Read their profiles, you?ll be surprised what you find in there.

Need to find out what they?re up to? Try typing their screen name, email address, name, or cell phone number into Google and see what pops up. I guarantee you?ll find your son or daughter?s picture, email address, and tons of should be private information about them listed on sites like hotornot.com, buddypic.com, facebattle.com, facethejury.com, or facebook.com

Does your son or daughter have a livejournal or a blog? If so do you read it? You probably should. There?s nothing wrong with reading their diary if they?re posting it on the internet. Thousands of other people probably are.

For the concerned parent, Microsoft offers a Guide to L33tSpeak on their website, and noslang.com offers a free Internet slang dictionary and translator where you can brush up on your slang, or translate your son / daughter?s live journal.

Keeping your kids safe online - slang every parent should know

Do you know what your kids are up to online? Of course you do! You’ve blocked all the porn sites, set up filters, and even have a monitoring program to let you know if your kids are talking about sex, or porn, or meeting up with “uncle bob” from the chat room. You’re a smart parent, but you’d be shocked if you knew what your kids were really talking about online.

There’s a new trend popular among teenage chatters, and your filters won’t pick up any of it. It’s called l33tspeak, netspeak or just plain internet slang (leet speak from the word elite). You know what I’m talking about. Acronyms like lol wtf bbiab and nm. Today’s kids are also lazy, and use single letter words: U replaces you, R replaces are, o replaces oh, m replaces am etc…

Today’s kids are taking their creativity to the internet, and it’s affecting the way they speak. Kids (just like computer programmers) don’t like to type a lot, so they try to shorten their keystrokes whenever possible. It’s not only affecting the way they speak, it’s starting to affect the way they write. So bad in fact, that school teachers have even reported seeing “lol” (laughing out loud) turn up on hand-written papers. (How would you pronounce that?)

Many kids as old as 17 don’t know the difference between homonyms such as there, their, and they’re. There aren’t too many 17 year olds left who can even spell h-o-m-o-n-y-m anymore, and no it isn’t spelled with an i. Remember when your high school teachers used to complain about a comma splice? Today’s high school teachers are struggling to teach kids how to spell, and instant messaging isn’t helping.

If you’re concerned about your kids, it’s absolutely crucial you learn to understand their language. Your filters may pick up porn, but do they catch the word “pron”? What about warez, which is short for illegally obtained software.

Another key phrase is the word paw, short for “parents are watching” or pos for “parents over shoulder”. Every parent should be familiar with this term. Can you think of a non-naughty use for that sentence? I can’t. Learn to recognize the warning signs and find out what they’re doing that they don’t want you to know about.

Sure you blocked porn sites, but what about Google image search? Any teenager can tell you that online image searches are the best free porn sites ever. Go ahead, Try It Just type in anything remotely dirty and see what you get.

So what can you do? Talk to your kids. Get your own copy of AOL Instant Messenger and put their names on your buddy list. Read their profiles, you’ll be surprised what you find in there.

Need to find out what they’re up to? Try typing their screen name, email address, name, or cell phone number into Google and see what pops up. I guarantee you’ll find your son or daughter’s picture, email address, and tons of should be private information about them listed on sites like hotornot.com, buddypic.com, facebattle.com, facethejury.com, or facebook.com

Does your son or daughter have a livejournal or a blog? If so do you read it? You probably should. There’s nothing wrong with reading their diary if they’re posting it on the internet. Thousands of other people are reading it. How much personal information are they giving to complete strangers? You’ll be suprised.

Internet Slang Terms All Parents Should Know:
Do you know what these terms mean? Your kids do!
Chances are they’re using them online to talk to their friends. Some of them may shock you.

Never Forget Your Windows XP Password Again!

April 9, 2008 at 10:14 am | In Computer Tricks | No Comments

Never Forget Your Windows XP Password Again!

lots of people asking about how to hack into their computers after they forget their password. Granted, a lot of these methods work great, but wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to go to all of that hassle? Wouldn’t it be nice if the forgetful among us didn’t have to make really easy (and easily guessable) passwords?

There’s a very easy way to prevent all of this - create a password reset disk. If you’re proactive and create a password reset disk before you go absent minded, you can use it to easily reset your password. If you have a few minutes and a spare floppy disk, do this now! Think of it as preventative medicine for your computer - and your sanity. Ask anyone who has permanently lost access to their computer; it’s not a fun experience.

Instead, visitors will often see only some invitation on the doorway page leading them to other pages (i.e., “Click Here To Enter), or they may be automatically redirected to the doorway page. Several search engines have guidelines against doorway pages as they are seen as a form of SPAM, though they are more commonly allowed in through paid inclusion programs.

Things about Windows OS
certain interesting facts, tricks, loopholes, hacks, learn and enjoy

Do it on your own RISK.
Read the article carefully before trying out any trick.

Make your folders invisible..

1)Right Click on the desktop.Make a new folder
2)Now rename the folder with a space(U have to hold ALT key and type 0160).
3)Now u have a folder with out a name.
4)Right click on the folder > properties > customize. Click on change icon.
5)Scroll a bit, u should find some empty spaces, Click on any one of them.
click ok

Set Processes Priority

Follow this tip to increase the priority of active processes, this will result in prioritisation of processes using the CPU.
CTRL-SHIFT-ESC1.Go to the second tab called Processes, right click on one of the active processes, you will see the Set Priority option 2.

For example, your Run your CDwriter program , set the priority higher, and guess what, no crashed CD’s

Shutdown Trick !

Imidiate rapid shut down window
while shutting down window. open task manager(Ctr+Alt+Del),
Select shut down tab. and press ‘ Ctrl ‘ key while select Turn Off from dis tab.
Count 5 4 3 2 1 Voila!!! U r window will rapidly shut down.

Speed Up Ur Shut down !!

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the “Control” Folder.
Select “WaitToKillServiceTimeout”
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200).

and !
Like previous versions of windows, it takes long time to restart or shutdown windows xp when the “Exit Windows” sound is enabled. to solve this problem you
must disable this useless sound. click start button then go to settings -> control panel -> Sound,Speech and Audio devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds, then under program events and windows menu click on “Exit Windows” sub-menu and highlight it.now from sounds you can select, choose “none” and then click apply and ok. now you can see some improvements when shutting down your system.

Hide ur folders.. never known trick !
Disguise them to “Recycle Bin”
Rename any folder with extension {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
eg,
if u’ve a folder games
press F2,
then type, “games.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}”
c the magic….
then 2 get to original form,
remove the extension using
“ren games.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} games” in dos or as a bat file
n u are done..

Lock pc just by double clicking mouse
You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using
a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field.
Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked.
And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

SPEED UP UR ACROBAT READER
(ALMOST LIKE NOTEPAD)

Do u get irritated when acrobat reader takes 5/10 seconds to load when you want to open a pdf document. There is a way to speed up the loading.

1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
(C:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\.. whatever)

2. Move all the files and folders from the “plugins” directory to the “Optional” directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).

Also make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and not allow you to move the files).

Now your acrobat reader will load very fast
and almost as good as notepad..

Remove Stored username and Passwords !
To remove the Stored User Names and Passwords from your system, try this:
Click Start, Run and type Control keymgr.dll
Remove the entries from the list.
The other ways to access this dialog are:
Type Control Userpasswords2 in RUN box, click Advanced, Manage Passwords
-or-
From Control Panel, select your User Account, click Manage your network passwords
It Works

Remove the Username and picture from Windows XP New Start Menu
The User account picture can be removed by turning off the Welcome Screen. Or, by switching to Windows Classic theme. Follow the method described in this article if you want to remove the username and picture from the Start Menu, without disabling the Welcome Screen and Windows XP Theme.

For those who want to remove the user name and user account picture from Start Menu, in order to have a blank blue panel at the top, try this:
Start Windows Explorer and go to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures

From that folder, rename the BMP file which corresponds to your user account.
( For example, if your username is Robert, rename Robert.bmp to old_Robert.bmp )
Next, rename the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures
to something else, say…

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\No_Default Pictures
To remove the user name, follow these steps

Start regedit.exe and navigate to the this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
In the right-pane, set NoUserNameInStartMenu value-data to 1

Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.
You’ll end up with a blue space at the top of the Start Menu.

To get back the username and the picture, reverse the above procedure.
For the New Start Menu, Windows XP looks for the .bmp file in the folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures
If the file is not found, it takes a picture from the “Default Pictures” sub-folder. By renaming the .bmp and the “Default Pictures” folder, you’re giving no chance for Windows to fetch an image for the Start Menu

Notepad Trick ! for complete list move to NOTEPAD TRICKS page !!

log trick !! make ur Notepad a diary !!
Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.
Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

WHY?
The reason this happens:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a “Byte-Order Mark” (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)
2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)
This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

SPEED UP MENU DISPLAY.!!
When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer experience possible I recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the different tiers to appear instantly.

Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.

Right on it and select Modify.
Change the value to 0.
Reboot your computer.

CLICKING * .AVI FILES ON EXPLORER CAUSING 100% CPU USAGE.!!
Well windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files. It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it’ll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage. To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the “Default” value which should be “{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}”
Voila! Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.
NOTE: Please use caution when using regedit. Improper usage may cause windows to behave imcorrectly. Also, I cannot be held resposible. Backup your registry first.
